Sojourn Boutique Villas, Siem Reap Cambodia
Sojourn Boutique Villas: Not just another big hotel, Sojourn is a way to experience Khmer hospitality and the treasures of Siem Reap from its lush tropical gardens.
Green Hotel facts: Sojourn’s commitment to the environment is not just limited to the usual basics of eco light bulbs and reducing unnecessary laundry. It runs on solar power for all hot water, only using gas as a backup. They filter all waste water and then reuse it for their gardens etc. The property also allows local villagers to come pick coconuts and palms that they can take away to boil for sugar or use for other purposes.
Sojourn also partners with organisations like Cleanbodia, Eco-Sense and Pic -Ups to take advantage of compostable cassava products including cassava bags, straws and take away food packing and utensils. They make use of alternatives like glass straws, and offer guests the option of taking part in the refill-not-landfill water bottle project.
They’re committed to using as many local and ethical suppliers as possible, including local produce like ibis rice, eggs, honey and coffee, vegetables, and fruits. Much of their pottery is handmade in Bakong. Compostable food waste is responsibly composted at Sojourn, and their cooking oil is turned into biofuel.
Every guest also receives a complimentary cloth shopping bag, with environmental messages in English and the local language Khmer.
Sojourn is owned by an Australian couple who also started Beyond Unique Escapes, which focuses on ethical/responsible travel, by making choices that reduce waste and use reusable or environmentally friendly packaging, among other things. Their other initiatives include Husk, which is their community NGO. A stay at Sojourn directly contributes to HUSK Cambodia, helping it continue its work within the local community. At HUSK, they use old plastic bottles as a building material, with which they built the HUSK school, while the HUSK community centre works towards upcycling old fabrics like jeans and using them for making stuffed toys.
Style: Sojourn has the perfect balance, being just a short distance from the temples of Angkor Wat and minutes from the Siem Reap town, but also nestled between rice paddy fields and the abundant greenery of tropical palm trees. With only 10 rooms on the property set amongst lush gardens, and with one of only two known swim-up bars in Siem Reap within a stunning salt water pool, Sojourn is the perfect retreat from the bustle of big cities.
It also has an award-winning cooking school, as well as beautiful and novel experiences like a private destination dining experience in a traditional sala Thai thatched hut sitting over a lotus pond, surrounded by candles and traditional music.
Suitable for: Couples, friends, families, health or spa and wellness retreats.
Wellness: At the Origins Spa, a professionally trained team of wellness specialists administer a large range of treatments featuring many local and organic ingredients. Indulge in a traditional Thai massage, or a delightful chocolate body wrap or a full-body coconut scrub.
