Green facts: One&Only Nyungwe House is set amongst the rich tea plantations of Gisakura, on the edge of the iconic Nyungwe National Park, which covers approximately 1020 sq. km. of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps and bogs, and is one of the last mountain rainforest habitats on the planet.

The forest here is a lush and diverse habitat, and is home to over 13 different species of primates and 20% of all the apes in Africa, including chimpanzees and endangered monkeys. The Birdlife International called the forest the “the most important site for biodiversity conservation in Rwanda” because of its 275 recorded bird species. In addition to the animals and birds, the forest is also home to orchids, butterflies, moths and a number of other insects, leading the Government of Rwanda to afford it the highest level of protection in the country.

Due to its privilege to be in such a precious environment, One&Only Nyungwe House considers conservation and support for local communities of the utmost importance.

Their conservation initiatives include:

  • The opportunity for guests to participate in Umuganda - a nationwide initiative in Rwanda in which locals spend the last Saturday morning of every month working in the local community and giving back, by developing infrastructure or improving environmental protection.
